Mitigation through Mindfulness and Maintenance

Heating systems are the #2 cause of house fires
, second to cooking. Since your heating systems runs automatically and you don’t have as much control over it, it’s important that you properly install and maintain them. Did you know that 64% of all house fires are due to improper heating maintenance? They produce over 1 billion dollars in property damage every year!

You can sleep well if your system is inspected regularly by someone who knows what they are looking for. By attempting maintenance on your own systems you can put yourself at more risk, and we’ll never encourage that. Our job and role in society is to provide plumbing, heating and cooling solutions that you can safely rely on. Annual maintenance can be a pain because you don’t see many “results” from your investment, but the results are actually just the absence of events ranging from inconveniences to disasters.

If you don't have a working central heating system, you might be satisfied with your winter space heater. But these account for the majority of these heating system fires! Good Morning America did a segment and experiment detailing just how easy and fast space heater fires spread in the home:

Besides regular maintenance, there are some other things to consider that could help you keep your home safe:

First and foremost, you should have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at home, and test them regularly. If you have a wood burning fireplace, you should have your chimneys cleaned annually, depending on how often you use it. Avoid space heaters at all costs, as they are proven to be unsafe. Upgrading to a central heating system is your best bet. Pioneer Plumbing has a variety of options if you are looking to upgrade your current system. Taking care of your heating needs in the off season is a smart idea as we are often booked full for days in advance if you end up in an emergency situation during the winter months.
