To temporarily stop a pinhole leak, you need to apply pressure to the opening. The solution? Wrap duct tape around the broken pipe. In many instances, it supplies the necessary pressure. Unfortunately, duct tape doesn’t always give you enough pressure. In that case, you need to move to a more robust fix.

If your heating system has developed a leak, burst radiator pipe repair can really only be carried out by a professional.

Use a C-clamp

Another way to temporarily stop a small leak involves a C-clamp, a block of wood, and a piece of rubber. Because the block of wood is flat (and the pipe is round), it can only create pressure along a very narrow area of the pipe. If this is all you've got for a burst copper pipe repair, it can minimize damage until the plumber arrives.

Follow These Steps

  • Turn off the water at the main shut-off valve
  • Place a piece of rubber over the area where the pipe is leaking.
  • Put the block of wood on top of the piece of rubber
  • Open the C-clamp wide enough to surround the pipe, the gasket material, and the block of wood
  • Place the stationary part of the opening of the C-clamp against the pipe (opposite the location of the leak) and the screw part of the C-clamp against the block of wood. Tighten the screw clamp until it’s snug

Junkyards are filled with rubber that can be had for pennies. Old automotive radiator and heater hoses are just what the doctor ordered. If you have a friend who works on cars, he’ll probably be glad to give you all you need.

Using a Sleeve Clamp

A sleeve clamp stops everything from pinhole leaks to larger leaks. A sleeve clamp consists of two semicircular pieces of metal that, when put together, completely surround the pipe, hence the name sleeve. The clamp is about 3 inches long, but you have to buy one to fit your specific pipe size.

Other than the sleeve clamp, you only need a screwdriver.

  • Wrap the damaged section of pipe with the gasket material provided
  • Surround the gasket-wrapped pipe with the two semicircular clamps
  • Tighten the screws that connect the two halves of the sleeve clamp

If you think about it, things like hose clamps, C-clamps, duct tape, and rubber are pretty cheap, especially when you consider how much money they can save you if your pipes do spring a leak. This can be a good solution for a quick outside burst pipe repair job.

How To Handle a Burst Water Pipe in House

Burst pipes need to be immediately shut off at the source in order to mitigate further water damage. A burst pipe can occur due to a variety of factors, including tree roots, corrosion, or a collapsed pipe. When this happens you'll want to find your water shutoff valve and close it. Sometimes you are able to close the water valve under the sink for instance. The same approach applies for a burst water pipe outside house.

What Happens When Pipes Burst?

When pipes burst, you can expect a variety of catastrophic results. The primary one is of an excess spray of water around the surrounding areas. You will see evidence of your burst water pipe in your high water bills. You will also see it in the water damage that occurs to your home or property.

How Do You Know If Your Pipes Burst?

There are a number of things that you should be aware of when it comes to understanding whether or not your pipes have burst. While it is sometimes easy to diagnose a fast leaking pipe, the initial signs and symptoms for pipe failure can be more difficult to determine. For instance, if your water pressure goes up and down in addition to not looking right, you may have a slow pipe leak. Another thing to look out for is if your water smells like rotten eggs and if your pipes are making noises.

Another thing to look out for? If your water bill is too high. Red flags include these signs and symptoms such as if puddles keep forming under sinks. In such instances, your plumber can become your best friend. There are so many components to be aware of in a kitchen. If you require walk-in cooler repair for a commercial property, please be sure to consult a licensed plumber. Hiring a professional plumber is always your best bet.

Is Burst Pipe Water Damage Covered by Insurance?

This can be a tricky question. Homeowners insurance can help cover damage caused by plumbing issues if the leak is sudden and accidental. However, if the source of the problem stems from a lack of maintenance, homeowners insurance will probably not provide coverage.
