We have been installing and replacing grease traps in restaurants and food service facilities for years, the type that require filtration of grease, fats and oils from the waste water to prevent contamination of municipal sewer systems. If you would like a quote on the grease interceptor installation cost, call us for a free consultation on your specific make and model.
On October 26, 2012 Metro Vancouver implemented a bylaw with code requirements that establishes new limits on the amount of brown grease and solids that can flow out of grease interceptors into sewers. Business owners not in compliance with those construction code requirements may be subject to re-inspection fees and/or a fine. We'll provide a licensed plumber to work up a quote before starting work.
If your kitchen grease interceptor is not code compliant and must be replaced or if you would like to discuss grease capacity unit that can be installed to meet compliance codes, we'll be happy to go over those details with you. For instance a 1500 gallon grease interceptor installation in commercial buildings is a little more involved than most.
Grease build-up in sewers causes them to overflow, potentially damaging homes, businesses and the environment. At least $2.7 million is spent every year to deal with the effects of brown grease, including infrastructure maintenance and managing spills. When grease interceptors (or grease traps) are not properly maintained, grease from commercial kitchens enter the city sewer lines and cause sewer backups.
A grease trap (also known as poly grease interceptor, grease recovery device, grease capsule and grease converter) is a grease waste plumbing device (a type of trap) designed to intercept most amounts of grease, cooking oil and solids (byproduct of cooking) before they enter sewer lines. Common wastewater contains small amounts of oils which enter into septic tanks and treatment facilities from prep sinks and cookers to form a floating scum layer. This scum layer is very slowly digested and broken down by microorganisms in the anaerobic digestion process. Large amounts of oil from food wastes and food solids in restaurants can overwhelm a septic tank or sewer lines treatment facility, causing release of untreated sewage into the environment. High-viscosity fats and cooking grease such as lard solidify when cooled, and can combine with other solid waste to block drain pipes. Grease capacity of the model being used will be an important consideration.
Grease traps have been used since Victorian days for proper disposal of fat from cooking: Nathaniel Whiting obtained the first patent in the late 1800s. The traps reduce the amount of fats, oils and greases (FOGs) that enter sewers. They comprise boxes within the drain run that flows between the sinks in a kitchen and the sewer system. They only have kitchen waste water flowing through them, and do not serve any other drainage system, such as toilets. They can be made from many different materials, such as stainless steel, plastics, concrete & cast iron. The grease capacity can range from 35 liter to 45,000 liters and greater. They can be located above ground, below ground, inside the kitchen or outside the building.
The first thing is to remove the drain cover and look to see if there is anything visible in the drain. If the blockage is not too serious a plunger can fix it, but if that fails then chances are good something more solid has wedged itself in the drainpipe.
If you cannot unplug the urinal drain with a plunger, the next step is an auger. If there is a hand auger in the janitors closet then try that, but if you still cannot clear the clog it’s time to call a professional.
If you feel like you are wasting time, you are better off calling us. We got this covered!
A clogged urinal is part of our routine and something we can fix pretty fast. If there is a more serious underlying problem hidden in the drainage system, we will know that once we get deeper into the pipes.
When it comes to dealing with public sanitation, you want to be confident the team you hire knows what they are doing.
